Still Running

I took a little break from the blog while life things happened after the Marine Corps Marathon, but I'm still hitting the pavement.

I ran a Turkey Trot 5k with my brother-in-law on Thanksgiving day,

Our first race together! (And I have bed-head.)

the Brandon Half Marathon two weeks ago,

I cut that one a little too close!

the Let It Snow 5k for Girls on the Run last weekend,

I hijacked this pic of my friend Karen and her running buddy; I'm toward the back with mine.

I finally replaced my overly worn shoes with the newest Brooks Ghost (7),

At last, I get a wide shoe with good colors!

I went back to my bootcamp class this past week after a seven-month hiatus (ouch),

It's easy to smile when all the hard work's over!

I made a bike change that I've been wanting to do for a while--I sold both my road bike and my cruiser and bought a hybrid (if you ever want to know where NOT to try to sell, ask me),

I'm so excited to ride again!

and I ran (sort of) the Say No to Drugs 10k (a.k.a, the Scientology run) this morning. I was having a fantastic race for the first half, but then I started to feel a pain in my right-side abdominals, and all of a sudden I couldn't keep going. I had to pull over to the side and was practically doubled over in pain. I knew my abs were over-sore from the bootcamp workout, but I didn't think that pain would affect my run. However, I was also probably dehydrated, so I guess my muscles just seized up. I had to grab my right-side abs with both hands and stretch them vertically along my torso in order to keep moving. It was an awkward, painful, slow finish. But I had a great 5k and loved hanging out with friends afterward.

Just focus on those first three splits...

In one way, it's nice to not have a rigid marathon schedule to stick to; I can do whatever I want. But on the other hand, I struggle a bit more with accountability. Hence all the signing up for races. I'm actually surprised that I've kept up my weekly running, though my mileage is less, and I'm not running much in the mornings these days. It's been cold--like 40s--in the mornings for a while now. That's not tank-top running weather. But evening running is perfectly fine for me now. And in good news, my foot is bothering me less and less.

With the holidays coming up and then a tonsillectomy scheduled at the start of January, I'm sure things will get off course even more, and I'll have to just accept the lack of structure and temporary break from running and working out. Mid-January, I should be rarin' to go and ready to train for spring races!

Bed head or not, I love the photo of you and Jonathan. "Girls on the Run" looks like a great program, have you worked with them before? I want a pair of those shoes. They look comfortable. You make me smile when you say it's cold at 40 degrees. Tonsillectomy?

Actually, Shirley, Anna got me involved in Girls on the Run through her former job, years ago, so I've volunteered with them a few times. And through this last event, I might have an opportunity to do more work with them. Shoes a very comfy! Yeah, yeah--I lost my Ohio blood years ago :) Tonsillectomy because I have tonsil stones, which may be the culprit of my pain for the past year+ :-/

Surgery Chronicles: 12 Weeks and Progress

I'm now more than 12 weeks recovered from my second (and final!) foot surgery, and life is starting to feel a little more normal. When I l ast wrote an update , seven weeks ago (still blaming Irma for all of my delays), I had just gotten off of crutches but would wear my boot for two more weeks. I've been out of the boot and walking in shoes for just over five weeks. The constant discomfort I've felt in my foot from swelling is finally starting to wane. I work in the office now, I do my own groceries, and I even attended a work conference recently, which meant lots of walking at airports and the conference hotel, frequent standing, and few opportunities to elevate and ice. I was very concerned about how my feet, particularly the left one, would endure. And while it wasn't comfortable, I made it through, no worse for the wear in the end. I joined a new gym/community center recently, with a new and beautiful outdoor pool, and I'm so happy that I'm able to use ...

Play of Summer

Even though it is still technically spring time, the summer college semester begins in one week, the weather is consistently sunny and mid-80s, and baseball season is in full bloom. I embrace this time of year as a time to extend my outside activities beyond my nightly walks, to bike rides, benefit runs, beach days, and a newfound interest in softball. Yesterday Joe and I began the day with a 7:25am 5K run to benefit the Child Abuse Council . One of Tampa's largest and most regular 5Ks, the Gunn Allen Financial May Classic brought out over 1,500 of Tampa's athletes and do-gooders. Since it was a last-minute decision for us to register, we did not have a a chance to train, but we had both been keeping a somewhat regular exercise schedule in the weeks leading up to the run. Our goal was to finish, preferably to finish running. And we did. 36 minutes of concrete pounding, rhythmic breathing, and humanistic awareness, and we had completed our first 5K together, having run th...

Zucchini "Spaghetti" with Lentil and Mushroom Marinara (GF/V)

This meal was inspired by a  Pinterest recipe  I'd pinned long ago, but I didn't feel like looking at the actual recipe; I knew basically what I needed and decided to just experiment. Plus, I used marinara from a jar, which I happened to already have at home. Ingredients: 5 small zucchinis (or 2-3 large) 2 c. cooked lentils 3/4 jar of marinara (because that's what I had) 5 crimini mushrooms,  wiped clean  and diced 2 cloves garlic 1 small shallot bulb olive oil, salt, pepper, basil, cayenne Equipment: I used a mandolin slicer with a special blade to get the zucchini in the right shape, but you can also use a  spiralizer  or a  julienne peeler .  Because I already had the lentils pre-cooked (in my handy rice cooker--who knew!), I didn't need to bother with cooking them. I just put the marinara, lentils, and mushrooms in a pot to heat up (and cook the mushrooms) and added the spices. Next, I peeled the zucchini, w...
